Managing Your Debt

We would all like to reduce the stress, strain and pressure that is personal debt seems to be causing in our families and in our lives. None of us want to go back to the “good old days” of pay as you go, but not many of us want to continue to walk the credit tightrope that we have to travel. Here are a few suggestions for managing your debt:

1. Admit you have a problem
Sometimes we just can't make ends meet and we slip a little into debt. Then we hit a rough patch when a medical emergency arises and we sink a little further. No matter how hard we try after that it seems like we can never get our debt situation under control. We learn to live with it and struggle along but we know that it is a problem that keeps getting a little, or even a lot worse. The first step to solving the problem is to simply admit you have one.

2. Ask for Help
Your next step after admitting your problem is to ask for help. Start with friends or family members that have a proven track record of dealing well with their personal finances. You may be surprised to find that they too once had debt problems. Ask them how they go out of the situation and for advice about what you should do. Do the same with trusted colleagues at work. Ask for advice and you will receive lots of it.

3. Take Action
Make an appointment to see your loans officer or bank manager. Give them all the details and ask them for options. One suggestion they may make is to consolidate your debt into a debt consolidation loan. That will allow you get out from underneath the debt problem and make a regular monthly payment that you can actually afford.

If they can't help you your bank may send you to a debt counseling or debt consolidation service. Their expertise is in helping people in exactly the same situation as you and for a small percentage of flat rate will negotiate a settlement with your creditors that you can live with.

4. Don't Repeat Your Mistakes

Review where you went wrong and if at all possible, avoid making the same mistakes again. Learn from the errors of your ways and develop new skills and strategies for managing your credit and dealing with debt so that you never end up here again.
